Golden Valley General Mills Corporate Campus

This modern campus building architectures project can be found at Golden Valley, Minnesota, USA. This type of Master Plan/Site Design is a big development by oslund.and.assoc. architect for their client General Mills. The General Mills Corporate Campus finished in 2003, originally planned by S.O.M. Architects, is a report of 1950s modernism juxtaposed alongside a pastoral modern landscape design. The 35-acre site was being concerned to insert an innovative 324,000 square foot ultra modern office building architectures, a 138,000 square foot employee services construction and a 1,750-space parking construction. The office design landscape architect’s wish for this setting was to make the amazing illusion that the original buildings were floating surrounded by the beautiful natiral landscape, touching a motionless plane of water.

The General Mills Corporate Campus formal location plantings openly neighboring to the structures helped support the planning, while farther out an undulating natural landscape reinforces the attitude so flattering to the site sculpture. The landscape architect’s design made a crisp, minimalist and organic canvas for the relocated art deco style which was an ordinary additional room of the existing contemporary outdoor gallery. The campus building architectures upper story is a pedestrian link, although the lower story contains service and mechanical uses.

The campus design lower courtyard on the reverse surface of the two-story link is a mirror picture of the upper courtyard. The lower bluestone terrace proceeds as an outdoor dining room for employees, in addition to a gathering room for larger events. Stainless steel bridges cross over the water characteristic, mirroring the bands of bluestone over. The creative water channel system then feeds into a large pond, wherever its trajectory is reinforced with underwater fountains making a strong linear band of bubbles moving into the pond.

An awesome campus land bridge was intended to work as the break point among the formal and the informal landscape. On the campus exterior decoration is the storm water treatment portion of the water body through natural edges and native plant materials best suited for cleaning place run-off. An additional formal pond on the near side contrasts by the storm-water treatment portion of the water body on the far side, edged through native plants best suited for cleaning site run-off.

The carefully manipulated water feature pond transitions from a formal reinforcement of the simple modernist campus architecture to a more undulating, picturesque landscape which stylishly compliments General Mills’ extensive collection of sculpture on place.
